NOC News Round Up - Discovery in Liverpool special - 7 October 2016

From Tuesday this week RRS Discovery has been in Liverpool providing an exceptional venue for a series of public and stakeholder events - part of the Natural Environment Research Council's Into the blue showcase of environmental science in the UK. We've welcomed over 1,300 people to the ship this week, from primary school children to Ambassadors and talked about our science and technology from sunrise to sunset. Our arrival in Liverpool caused quite a stir in the city, with #RRSDiscovery trending on Twitter on Tuesday, and all the regional media and a few national outlets taking an interest, so our message has been delivered into millions of homes across the country.

There was such a lot of wonderful outreach undertaken this week, that we wanted to share it in this special bulletin. We hope you enjoy seeing what we've been up to, and if you want to come and see us for yourselves, we'll be in Manchester during October half term.

Day 1 - The weather was on our side for the ship's arrival

Making the regional news

At 04:00 a team from BBC North West travelled by boat out to meet Discovery as she made her approach to the city. They interviewed NOC's Ed Hill, Executive Director, about the role of research ships and the innovatives technologies they carry on board. You can see the news report from BBC North West online. ITV Granada joined us at the Cruise Terminal to interview Kevin Forshaw, Associate Director, Innovation and Enterprise, about the NOC's work with regional and international businesses. We also welcomed the Liverpool Daily Echo to tour the ship to uncover a fun case of mistaken identity.

UoL agreement signing

In the afternoon the NOC and University of Liverpool renewed their formal working relationship with the signing of a new agreement on the Bridge.

The two organisations have a long relationship, and this new formal agreement will cover joint activity related to scientific research and education in areas of mutual interest.
