Israeli Navy Intercepts Gaza-Bound Zaytouna Boat

By Palestine Chronicle Staff
Various media outlets have reported Israel's takeover of the Zaytouna, one of the Women's boats bound for Gaza, led by women and aimed at breaking the siege and deliver much needed aid to the enclave.
The connection with the boat and women on board was cut according to the international campaign to end Gaza's siege. Zahir Albirawi of freedom boat, "The connection with the boat has been cut off for the last 40 minutes." His announcement came minutes before media outlets have announced Israel's takeover of the boat.
The Zaytouna was supposed to be joined by Amal, another women-led boat, which could complete its journey as it suffered technical problems two days ago.
According to tweets from the Women's Boat to Gaza, the boat has been surrounded by the Israeli Navy and it is expected that the Captain, US Army Colonel Ann Wright, will be urged to turn the Zaytouna around before she enters Gaza's Israeli occupied water and risks being intercepted by the navy and its crew detained.
The Zaytouna is currently in international waters with a crew of 13 international activists on board.
Thousands of Gazans have been waving Palestinian flags along the beach in preparation for the Zaytouna's arrival and in solidarity with the peace activists who hoped to break the decade-long blockade on the Strip and breathe hope to those living in the enclave.
The Israeli Navy is expected to lead the Zaytouna to the port of Ashdod, north of the Gaza Strip, where the women will be handed over to authorities, questioned and deported.
The Israeli army has refused to comment on the reports saying a statement will be released in due course.
Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have been waiting for the boat to break the siege. In 2010, Israel took over the Turkish flotilla, the Mavi Marmara, in the international waters, killing 10 Turkish activists on board.
Attempts to break the siege have never stopped despite Israel not allowing any ship sailing to Gaza from reaching the besieged population since then.

Dozens of Israeli Airstrikes Hit Gaza

By Palestine Chronicle Staff
Local sources in the Gaza Strip said dozens of Israeli airstrikes have hit the coastal enclave today after a home-made projectile was fired into Israel earlier this morning. A Salafi group claimed responsibility for firing the rocket.
The airstrikes targeted some 25 different sites in the Gaza Strip, most notably, the Navy Force Building to the north of Gaza. In addition, Al-Qadisiah military training site to the east of Gaza was targeted by Israel.
Israel has also shelled various sites and agricultural lands throughout the Gaza Strip. No injuries were reported.
The Islamic Jihad Movement has accused Israel of further escalating violence against the Gaza Strip to divert attention from Al-Zaytouna boat - all women-led boat, which was sailing to Gaza to break the siege. The boat was intercepted by Israeli forces off the Gaza coast. Meanwhile, Hamas has warned Israel it 'will not tolerate attacks against the Gaza Strip'.
The Gaza Strip has been under siege for 10 years. The new Israeli Defense Minister, Avigdor Lieberman, has adopted a policy against the Gaza Strip which includes carrying out dozens of airstrikes in response to projectiles fired from Gaza.

Shimon Peres, An Israeli Brand without Substance

By Ramzy Baroud
Former Israeli Prime Minister and President, Shimon Peres, was a very successful brand. He was presented to the world as stately, wise, a relentless advocate of peace, and a sane voice amidst a conflict deemed senseless and unending.
Now that he is dead at 93, international media are rife with touching tributes and heartwarming eulogies of the Nobel Peace Prize winner, one of Israel's most sagacious 'founding fathers', who was also seen as a 'giant among men'.
These attributes were mostly based on sentiment rather than fact, however, full knowledge of the man's legacy certainly lingers among many Palestinians, Lebanese and advocates of peace and justice in the Middle East.
The truth is, Peres was never truly a peacemaker - he never labored to achieve fair and just political compromises that would preserve the dignity and rights of the Palestinians, along with securing the future of his people. In fact, he was a maximalist, a man who blatantly shoved his ideas forward in order to achieve his goals, no matter what the method or the price.
Nor was he a leader with a specific qualities that allowed him to excel in particular fields of politics. Instead, he was the embodiment of the archetypical Israeli politician who swapped roles, and rebranded himself as the occasion or role required.
"Over seven decades, Peres served as prime minister (twice) and president, though he never actually won a national election outright," wrote Ben White in Middle East Monitor. "He was a member of 12 cabinets and had stints as defense, foreign and finance minister."
He was also characterized as a 'warrior' at home, and a peace 'dove' in global forums. He came across as kind and stately, and Western media often embraced that erroneous image with little questioning.
But for many people, Shimon Peres was a false prophet. Like Ehud Barak, Tzipi Livni, Ehud Olmert and others, he was a 'peacemaker' by name only, and only by those whose ideals he fulfilled.
Fearing that his reputation as 'too soft' to lead Israel - which is often led by battle-hardened generals - would affect his standing among voters, Peres often meted out severe punishment on the Palestinian and Lebanese peoples. His history was rife with brutal war crimes that went unpunished.
Although he is remembered for his ordering of the bombing of a UN shelter in the Lebanese village of Qana in 1996 - which killed and wounded hundreds of innocent people - the list of war crimes associated with his name is as long as his career. He remained, until the very end a staunch supporter of the Israeli right-wing government's wars on Gaza and the perpetual siege on that impoverished, forsaken region.
Even as a 'peacemaker' he failed terribly. He championed the Oslo Accords as a political treaty that would entrench the Israeli occupation and turn the little that remained of historic Palestine into disjointed Bantustans, as was the case, if not to a worse extent, in apartheid South Africa. Yet he certainly never took responsibility, or expressed any remorse for the resultant plight of the Palestinians.
Nevertheless, the brand of Shimon Peres is an old one. It spans over the course of his long career, starting with him joining underground Zionist militias prior to the establishment of Israel on appropriated Palestinian land. His militant group, the Haganah, was entrusted with the implementation of Plan Dalet, which essentially aimed at the ethnic cleaning of the Palestinian population of its historic homeland.
As one of the 'disciples of David Ben-Gurion', the first Prime Minister of Israel, Peres "spent his long political career in the public spotlight," although "his greatest successes were engineered in the shadows," according to Yaron Ezrahi, a politics professor at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, as quoted by Jonathan Cook.
One of these 'successes' was the nuclear bomb. Although various Middle Eastern countries, most notably Iraq and Iran, are often derided for nuclear weapons they never possessed, Peres was the founding father of weapons of mass destruction in the region.
"Peres, like his mentor, believed an Israeli bomb was the key to guaranteeing Israel's status - both in Washington DC and among the Arab states - as an unassailable Middle East power," Cook wrote.
Dodging American protests, Peres enlisted the clandestine support of Britain, France, Norway and other countries to realize his ambition.
Yet throughout his career, Peres never ceased speaking of 'peace.' His rhetoric and rehearsed face of 'sincerity' suited even his political rivals very well, for the juxtaposition of peace-loving Peres vs, for example, warmongering Ariel Sharon presented Israel as a country with healthy, democratic institutions.
The true mockery though is that the differences between Peres and his rivals, who also included former Israeli Prime Minister, Yitzhak Shamir, were barely even apparent, and only relevant within Israel's own political and historical contexts.
For example, Shamir, who led the government between 1983-84 and, again between 1986-1992 was a member of the terrorist Zionist paramilitary group, Lehi, also known as the Stern Gang, at the time when Peres was a member of the Haganah. Throughout their militant and political careers, both collaborated on the subject of ethnic cleaning, waged wars, expanded illegal Jewish colonies, and entrenched the military occupation of Palestinian land after 1967.
However, 'stately' Peres chose his words carefully, and was indeed a cunning diplomat, while Shamir was a blunt and disagreeable character. As far as practical differences are concerned, however, the end results of their policies were practically identical.
A particularly poignant example of this was the unity government in Israel in 1984 which had a most peculiar leadership arrangement that included both Shamir of the rightwing Likud party and Peres of the Labor party - who was at the time in the early phase of his reinvention as 'dove.' (Yitzhak Rabin was appointed to the post of Defense Minister.)
These two individuals who stood at the helm of the Israeli leadership constituted the worst possible combination from the point of view of Palestinians in the occupied territories. While Shamir and Peres served the role of the hard-liner and peace-seeker respectively before the international community, both men and their governments presided over a legacy saturated with violence, illegal annexation of Palestinian land and settlement expansion.
The number of Jewish settlers who moved to the occupied territories between 1984 and1988, rose considerably, contributing to a policy of a slow annexation of Palestinian land and predictably, the ethnic cleansing of more people.
In October 1994, Peres, along with Yasser Arafat and Yitzhak Rabin, were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. While Rabin was assassinated by a Jewish extremist and Arafat died from suspected poisoning, Peres lived to be 93, advocating Israel's interest at the expense of Palestinians to the very end, justifying Israeli wars, siege and military occupation.
The Israelis and many in mainstream Western media may very well praise Peres as a hero, but for Palestinians, Lebanese and a multitude of others he is another war criminal who escaped any accountability for his countless misdeeds.

No Matter Who Wins US Presidential Election, Palestine Already Lost

By ISM, Al-Khalil Team - Hebron, Occupied Palestine
One week ago, the United States and much of the world turned on their televisions to tune into the 2016 Presidential debate. Advertised as the most anticipated debate in a generation, millions watched as Democrat Hillary Clinton sparred off against Republican Donald Trump on US economics, foreign policy, and who would be the most well suited candidate to sit in the White House.
On the critical side, much has been said on Trump's abrasiveness and Clinton's inability to reconcile her and her husband's failed policies in the past.  There is also much talk from the "progressive" side of US politics (those originally seeking the nomination of socialist Bernie Sanders) of voting for neoliberal Clinton as the "lesser evil" against neofascist Trump.
While much can be said and argued about which of these candidates might be the best (or least, worst) choice for the American people, the debate failed to take into consideration a very important demographic - everyone else in the world!  US domestic policy has forever been tied to its foreign policy, a foreign policy that has left countless bloodied bodies around the world from Argentina to the Philippines while Americans sit and contemplate their next big investment.
As an American citizen currently residing in Israeli occupied Palestine, I viewed this debate in a much different light.  Since the US gives more aid money to Israel than any other country through its government and countless Zionist charities, the political course of the US is the number one factor determining the future of the occupation.
Trump and Clinton thus used the debate to showcase their complete disregard for the people of West Asia - what we in the US refer to as the Middle East.  Despite their many disagreements, both candidates hold the same mantra regarding this rich and complex region: Go after terrorism, no matter the cost!
Trump used this point to attack Clinton, saying that the US invasion and occupation of Iraq, which Clinton indeed supported, "created the power vacuum" that ISIS (known in this part of the world as Daesh) filled.  This is very true, yet Trump's surprisingly seeming anti-imperialist analysis came crashing down when he added his own two cents to the solution - we never should have pulled out the troops in the first place!  If the US occupation had just continued, ISIS would never have existed, says this logic.
Many would expect such imperialist rhetoric from Trump, though many have seemed incapable of recognizing the same tendencies within Clinton's talking points.  Clinton fired back at Trump, saying that US occupying forces were pulled from Iraq because "the new Iraqi government would not have protected them".
This colonial apologist language was backed up by her praising of NATO forces for supporting the occupation of Afghanistan, an occupation that has existed in different forms up to the present day.  In order to attack Trump for claiming that "America's allies need to pay their fair share" in terms of military alliances, Clinton finished by saying that she would work with "America's allies" until the end.
The Israeli state and its illegal settlements in the West Bank are funded directly by the US government and Zionist charities within that country.
These "allies" Clinton and Trump speak of join the US in being some of the most oppressive, militaristic nation states that exist on the map.  Top among them isIsrael.  During Trump's speech to the American-Israeli Political Affairs Committee (AIPAC), he praised "[America's] cultural brother, the only democracy in the Middle East, the state of Israel", and vowed to "veto any attempt by the UN to impose its will on the Jewish state".
Anyone looking for a less hawkish alternative would find no ally in Clinton whoclaimed to "ensure Israel maintains its qualitative military edge" while expressing, "For the security of Israel and the world, we need America to remain a respected global leader, committed to defending and advancing the international order".  She even went as far as to encourage the young people present to "oppose the alarming Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement known as BDS".
What both of these Presidential candidates have proven through their rhetoric is that no matter who wins the Presidency, Zionism has already won in the United States.
When politicians speak of Israel's "security", it is code speak for the racist and militarized occupation of the Palestinian people.  When President Obama signed the recent $38 billion dollar weapons deal with Israel, he signed it in Palestinian blood.  American bullets pierce the skin of Palestinians standing up for their rights.  American guns are used to intimidate Palestinian shop owners as settlers parade through their market places.  American tanks and jets rain death upon Palestinian communities.  And American bulldozers destroy Palestinian homes to make way for illegal Israeli settlements.
Both Trump and Clinton have shown that "business as usual" will be taken to far more dangerous levels.  Palestine has already lost the US Presidential election.
Rifle-fired tear gas canister shells used against unarmed Palestinian youth in the streets of Bab al-Zawiye in occupied Hebron. These crowd-control weapons are bought with money from US aid packages to Israel, usually directly from US arms companies.
If you stand with Palestine, the time has come to admit that the election is nothing more than a distraction from the solidarity work that must be done.
To support the Palestinian people is to act not with your ballet but with your body.  Join Palestinian solidarity groups and take to the streets of every major city demanding an end to this support of apartheid.  Proudly take up Clinton's mantle of "bully" and actively take part in the BDS movement to call out and cut off the corporations that profit from land grabs and state violence in Palestine.
And, of course, come to Palestine and bear witness to the brutality of the Israeli occupation and the undying resiliency and wonderful hospitality of the Palestinian people.
The people of Palestine have asked for our unconditional and uncompromising solidarity.  It is time we answered their call.

Anger After Irish Bank Closes Palestine Solidarity Group's Account

The Bank of Ireland has been criticized after shutting the account of the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC), the latest in a string of similar moves by European banks.
IPSC has formally complained, following the closure of its account which it uses to lodge donations, and intends to take a case to the Financial Services Ombudsman.
Earlier this year, the Bank of Ireland requested information from IPSC about its funding and how funds were spent, in response to which, IPSC submitted its audited accounts.
According to IPSC, the Bank of Ireland has "failed to give a specific explanation of why it was closing the accounts."
Kevin Squires, IPSC coordinator told TheJournal.ie: "Bank of Ireland's silence speaks volumes. Honestly it's hard to not view this as part of a wider campaign which has seen banks close accounts in the UK, Austria and France."
Vice-President of Sinn Fein and a Teachta Dala for Dublin Central, Mary Lou McDonald, said the decision was "outrageous".
She added, "The Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign are an established advocacy group that have spent years protesting against the treatment of the Palestinian people. To close their account citing that they associate with a 'high risk country'...this is not only outrageous; this is insulting to the Palestinian people."
"Bank of Ireland cannot stay silent on this matter."
The following is from a statement by the IPSC:
This denial of banking rights, the ensuing loss of income and the potential reputational damage to the IPSC comes in the context of similar seemingly coordinated attacks on Palestine solidarity organizations across Europe and the United States. Numerous bank accounts belonging to such organizations have been closed in France, Germany, Austria and the UK. It is difficult to escape the conclusion that this attack on the IPSC's ability to bank - which is, in effect, the ability to function at all - is political in nature and forms part of this wider attack on organizations that advocate for peaceful action to secure Palestinian rights enshrined in international law.
Israel has boasted of conducting a global campaign of 'lawfare' - using legal and other punitive threats to silence and attack supporters of Palestinian rights. This attack on the IPSC It appears to be part of this campaign, a politically motivated measure to silence a human rights organization that campaigns for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) against Israel until it fulfills its obligations under international law - a campaign the Irish government views as an entirely "legitimate" means of protest "intended to pressure Israel into ending the occupation."
