Good morning, and welcome to the Morning Mail. Sign up here for our Guardian Today email, sent every day at noon, and you can sign up to our new Guardian Australia sport email here.

Among the stories leading our website this morning is the latest on the New Zealand earthquake. Former All Blacks great Richie McCaw, who is now a commercial pilot, has been flying rescue workers in the wake of the 7.5 magnitude earthquake. The small tourist town of Kaikoura has been cut off as landslides, destroyed roads and bridges block entry in and out of the coastal resort, while an Irish pub in the small town of Hanmer Springs has been a place of relief for quake victims.

Keep reading for the rest of the top stories this morning, with more news from around Australia and the world.

One last thing

First Dog on the Moon

Are you a sinister filthy elite? Take this quiz and find out now! Elites! Everything is their fault, they run the country and the media without even being in government or owning News Corp. Maybe voting for racists isn't racist? Who can say?(FYI, you're reading The Guardian so you're either an Elite or a troll anyway – you decide) Have an excellent day and if you spot something I've missed, let me know on Twitter at @earleyedition.
