Welcome Angela Professor Angela Hatton begun her new role as Director of Science and Technology at the NOC yesterday.  On her appointment, Angela said, "These are interesting and exciting times for the NOC; addressing globally significant challenges, driving forward technology development and conducting science that has a positive impact on society and the economy. I'm delighted to take up the challenge of helping the NOC achieve this and to strengthen partnerships with the marine science community in the UK and around the world."  Read more. Future of our oceans Representatives from Japan, Italy, France, UK, Germany, USA, Canada and the European Commission met in the NOC for a three day workshop as part of the G7 Future of the Oceans initiative. They were helped by representatives from major international organisations such as the IPCC, IOC, GOOS and POGO. Their aim was to develop proposals around each of the five actions agreed in May at the G7 Science ministers meeting in Japan. Executive Director of the NOC, Professor Edward Hill, said, "I am pleased that the NOC has once again been able to play a positive role in facilitating scientific and technical discussions that are shaping actions focused on how G7 Governments and their marine science communities should take forward more effective international collaboration concerning the oceans and seas." Full details of the actions agreed in Japan can be found online.  New mini robot sub unveiled at the NOC The first robotic micro sub capable of being deployed from a robotic surface vehicle was unveiled at the Marine Autonomous and Technology Showcase. This innovative new design, led by Planet Ocean & co-developed by NOC, ASV ltd & The University of Southampton, is around three times smaller than current autonomous underwater vehicles . At around 50cm long, their tiny size allows them to be used in ways previously not considered. Microsubs are also able to frequently monitor infrastructure, such as pipelines for corrosion or potential leaks in an extremely cost effective manner. Read more on our website. NOC at Sustainable Ocean Summit 2016 NOC's Kevin Forshaw spoke this week at the Sustainable Ocean Summit 2016 in Rotterdam as part of a panel discussing the 'Digital Ocean' which was convened by Liquid Robotics, with representation from ESA, ExactEarth and companies; Windward and TeamSurv. The panel looked at how a range of technological innovation can enable the digital ocean of the future.   The Sustainable Ocean Summit 2016 theme was "Ocean 2030: Sustainable Development Goals and the Ocean Business Community". The SOS is uniquely designed to bring together leadership companies from the diverse Ocean Business Community: shipping, oil and gas, fisheries, aquaculture, seabed mining, tourism, renewable energy, ports, dredging, mining, submarine cables, marine science, engineering and technology, the maritime legal, financial and insurance communities, and others – as well as ocean stakeholders from the government, inter-governmental, academic and environment communities.
