Arianespace caps year with Ariane 5 launch of Star One D1 and JCSat-15 Caleb Henry — European launch provider Arianespace completed its 11th and final launch of the year Dec. 21, putting satellites for Asia's and South America's largest regional operators on their way to the geostationary arc. ULA's first launch of the year will be SBIRS GEO-3 Phillip Swarts — United Launch Alliance aims to send up the Air Force's missile-warning Space-Based Infrared System (SBIRS) GEO-3 on Jan. 13 when it conducts its first launch 2017. That satellite was originally scheduled to launch Oct. 3, but was delayed when builder Lockheed Martin discovered they had an issue on an unrelated satellite with an engine component that was also used aboard SBIRS.
