Good morning, and welcome to the Morning Mail.

Among the stories leading our website this morning: Donald Trump has granted controversial adviser Steve Bannon a regular seat at meetings of the National Security Council, in a presidential memorandum that brought the former head of Breitbart into some of the most sensitive meetings at the highest levels of government.

In giving Bannon a permanent spot, it means he can attend every meeting of the National Security Council. But Trump also said the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff and the director of national intelligence, two of the most senior defense chiefs, will only attend meetings when discussions are related to their "responsibilities and expertise".

Keep reading for the rest of the top stories this morning, with more news from around Australia and the world.
