| The blitz of advertising and bonuses over the next eight months is meant to boost recruitment for this fiscal year from 62,000 to 68,500 new soldiers, the largest in-year increase in the history of the all-volunteer force that dates to 1973, military officials told USA TODAY. The expansion was authorized under a law signed by former president Barack Obama last year to halt a years-long reduction in U.S. forces.
