EBRD cultural event: Inside Chernobyl’s Mega-Tomb

Documentary film, discussion, reception

New Safe Confinement - shelter over the destroyed Chernobyl reactor

Inside Chernobyl's Mega-Tomb

A BBC documentary film

Thursday 9 February 2017, 17.15-20.30

The New Safe Confinement, the structure that the NY Times called "an extraordinary feat of human ingenuity", is EBRD's largest and lengthiest project. This gripping, hour-long BBC documentary follows the construction of the 36,000-tonne steel structure which late last year was inched into place over the ruins of the nuclear power plant destroyed in the 1986 Chernobyl disaster.

After the film, director Martin Gorst will be joined on stage for a discussion with Nicolas Caille, project director at Novarka, the French construction consortium responsible for completing the project, and Vince Novak, Director of the EBRD Nuclear Safety Department. Our special guest for the evening will be Natalia Galibarenko, Ambassador of Ukraine to the UK.

Join us for a viewing of this extraordinary film, followed by what promises to be a fascinating discussion. During registration, tea and coffee will be served.  The film will begin promptly at 6pm. There will be a drinks reception for all to close this event.

Admission is free and EBRD staff members need not register. External guests will have to register online by Wednesday 8 February 2017.

Please note that all guests must bring a form of identification and may be subject to a random bag search.
