Business, industry and trade UK mergers and acquisitions activity in context, 2016 The value of mergers and acquisitions in the UK by foreign companies (inward M&A) reached a record high during 2016 of £187.4 billion, which was dominated by a small number of very-high-value deals. Removing these very-high-value deals from the total value of inward M&A in 2016 brings this activity in-line with other annual totals since 2009. Mergers and acquisitions involving UK companies: Oct to Dec 2016 During Quarter 4 (Oct to Dec) 2016, the estimates for the total number of successful domestic and cross-border mergers and acquisitions (M&A) involving UK companies remained relatively flat when compared with both Quarter 3 (July to Sept) 2016 and also with the same quarter of the previous year (Quarter 4 2015). During 2016 (Jan to Dec), the number of successful inward and domestic M&A involving UK companies saw notable increases, showing the highest levels of M&A activity since 2008 and 2011; in comparison, the number of outward M&A involving UK companies declined. People, population and community Adult smoking habits in the UK: 2015 In 2015, of all adults in the UK 17.2% smoked, down from 20.1% of adults who smoked in 2010. Of the constituent countries, 16.9% of adults currently smoke in England; for Northern Ireland, this figure is 19.0%; Scotland, 19.1%; Wales, 18.1% – in recent years, Scotland and Wales have seen the largest decreases in current smokers. Deaths registered in England and Wales, provisional: week ending 24 Feb 2017 The provisional number of deaths registered in England and Wales in the week ending 24 February 2017 (week 8) was 11,794; this represents an increase of 150 deaths registered in comparison with the previous week (week 7).
