Autosub Long Range (ALR) completed its first Antarctic mission beneath the waves of the Southern Ocean this week as part of the DynOPO project.
The team of researchers from the University of Southampton and British Antarctic Survey (BAS), along with NOC engineers aboard the BAS research ship RRSJames Clark Ross, deployed ALR in the Weddell Sea, near the South Orkney Islands.
During the deployment on Tuesday, the unmanned vehicle was under water for nearly 30 hours, following a pre-programmed route, before surfacing for fine-tuning by the engineering team on Wednesday.
BAS oceanographer Dr Povl Abrahamsen captured the first deployment and retrieval on video.
Ocean Business 2017
We have been delighted to host Ocean Business 2017, the hands-on marine technology exhibition and training forum, this week in Southampton. The event saw over 340 of the world's leading manufacturers and service providers in the maritime industry sector set up their stalls and demonstrations at our sunny dockside site.
During the three day event we welcomed hundreds of visitors to our exhibition stand as well as running a busy session of talks and tours. We also celebrated the launch of the new ecoSUB Robotics Ltd, ecoSUBĀµ and ecoSUBm, which Planet Ocean developed in partnership with the NOC.
Read more about the NOC at Ocean Business here, including the international delegations we were pleased to welcome. You can also watch the roving repoter short videos we made with some of our partners during the event.
Did this image fool you?
On Saturday we put out a story claiming the team on board RRS Discovery had found a pirate ship laying on the bottom of the Atlantic ocean. However, me hearties, it was only an April Fool's! To read the story concocted by the crew go to our website.
