Business, industry and trade Current price turnover for production and services industries. Export turnover for production industries by market (export, domestic and total).
The Experimental Statistics on exports of services show that London produced over £100 billion of service exports in 2015, which was 46% of all exports of services from the UK. Output in the construction industry grew 3 month on 3 month for the fifth consecutive period, rising by 0.2% in the first quarter of 2017; this is in line with the estimate for construction output included in the preliminary estimate of gross domestic product for January to March 2017. Despite growing on a quarterly basis, construction output fell for the third consecutive period month-on-month; decreasing by 0.7% in March 2017. New housing experienced strong growth in March, increasing month-on-month by 3.8%; month-on-year by 5.4%; and quarter-on-quarter by 0.2%. Economy Today's data indicate that overall UK economic activity grew slowly in Quarter 1 (Jan to Mar) 2017, following growth at the end of 2016. Total production output rose by 0.1% in Quarter 1 2017, despite a 0.5% monthly fall in March. The total trade deficit (goods and services) widened both in Quarter 1 2017 and in the month of March. In Quarter 1 2017, the trade deficit widened by £5.7 billion to £10.5 billion, mainly due to a 3.3% rise in import values. Construction output rose by 0.2% in Quarter 1 2017, despite a 0.7% fall in March.
Between Quarter 4 (Oct to Dec) 2016 and Quarter 1 (Jan to March) 2017, the total trade deficit (goods and services) widened by £5.7 billion to £10.5 billion; this followed a sharp narrowing in Quarter 4 2016. The UK's total trade deficit (goods and services) widened by £2.3 billion between February and March 2017 to £4.9 billion, contributing nearly half of the quarterly deficit.
The Index of Production for Quarter 1 (Jan to Mar) 2017 was estimated to have increased by 0.1%. Increases of 0.3% in manufacturing and 1.8% in mining and quarrying were offset by a fall of 4.3% in energy supply. In March 2017, total production decreased by 0.5% compared with February 2017, due to falls of 4.2% in energy supply and 0.6% in manufacturing. Basic metals and metal products provided the largest downward pressure on manufacturing in March 2017, while warmer-than-average temperatures led to a decrease in energy supply. Total production output for March 2017 compared with March 2016 increased by 1.4%, with growth in three of the four main sectors, with manufacturing providing the largest contribution, increasing by 2.3%. Employment and labour market This report includes the latest figures from the Labour Force Survey for October to December 2016, first published in March 2017, as well as new estimates from the survey of businesses for May and November 2016, respectively. The results from the November 2016 survey of businesses indicated that there were 1.7 million contracts that did not guarantee a minimum number of hours, where work had actually been carried out under those contracts. This represented 6% of all employment contracts. The equivalent figures for May 2016 were 1.7 million and 5%. The number and percentage of contracts that did not guarantee a minimum number of hours are unchanged compared with a year earlier (November 2015), however, the number of businesses making some use of these contracts fell. |
