8 powerful facts about Interior’s energy work

Mail from the U.S. Department of the Interior

Did You Know: Interior has a long history of delivering power to Americans. The Department was established in 1849 to handle domestic matters, and when the Bureau of Mines was created in 1910, Interior became responsible for mine safety and minerals technology.

Over 100 years later, Interior's role in energy has expanded to include overseeing the federal coal program, managing energy development in federal waters, and being the second largest producer of hydropower in the U.S. Today federal lands and waters supply 30 percent of the nation's energy production -- generating affordable power for homes and businesses, creating jobs, and providing much needed revenue for state, local, federal, and tribal governments.
