On Saturday we welcomed over 1,400 people to the Southampton site for the day. Much of our science and technology was on display for people to get close to, as well as hands on experiments to do and plenty to look at.
This year's UK-OSNAP expedition draws to a close
This week the UK-OSNAP expedition has been completed, and the RRS Discovery is back in Southampton.
The final two weeks involved the deployment and recovery of gliders (pictured left) as well as taking sediment samples from the sea floor. The later resulted in the accidental collection of a starfish (pictured below).
The salinity, temperature and current data recorded by the gliders forms part of sustained observations of this area. These observations are vital for helping scientists form an improved picture of the transport of heat and freshwater by the North Atlantic Subpolar Gyre, which greatly affects the climate of the North Atlantic and Europe.

World Oceans Day 2017
Yesterday was World Oceans Day and #worldoceansday on twitter was awash with fantastic graphics and videos focusing on how important the ocean is. The BBC made a special film, which was played at the opening of the high-level United Nations Conference to Support the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development. You can view the BBC film here.
