Deaths registered by area in England and Wales, monthly provisional: May 2017

The provisional number of deaths registered in England and Wales in May 2017 was 44,253; this represents an increase of 5,182 deaths in comparison with the previous month and an increase of 2,891 deaths in comparison with the same month in 2016.

Moveable public holidays and the number of weekends, when register offices are closed, affect the number of registrations made in the published months and in the corresponding months in previous years. The increase in the provisional number of deaths registered in May 2017 is likely to be the result of a higher number of days when register offices were open during the month in comparison with April 2017.
