The Belgian town of Passchendaele is marking the 100th anniversary of the start of one of the bloodiest battles of the First World War. The casualties were massive and, quite possibly, unnecessary.

A discotheque shooting in Constance in southwestern Germany that left two people dead was preceded by an argument, police say. They have ruled out terrorism, saying the cause was likely of a personal nature.

Women's Euro 2017: Germany crash out after stunning defeat by Denmark
Germany's women's bid for a seventh straight European title is over after Denmark came back to win 2-1 in their rearranged quarterfinal. The game was postponed from Saturday because of heavy rain.
