Retail Sales in Great Britain: August 2017

In August 2017, the quantity bought (volume) in the retail sales industry increased by 1.0% compared with July 2017; with other non-food stores and non-store retailing as the main contributors to growth.

Compared with August 2016, the quantity bought increased by 2.4%; the 52nd consecutive month of year-on-year increase in retail sales.

Year-on-year contribution of food stores remains flat whilst there was a fall in the contribution of growth within petrol stations, showing that contributions to the overall growth came from non-essential items.

House price statistics for small areas in England and Wales: year ending December 1995 to year ending March 2017

The median price paid for residential properties in neighbourhoods (middle layer super output areas) within England and Wales ranged from £28,500 (within County Durham) to £2,550,000 (within Westminster).

The nominal total value of residential property transactions in England and Wales for year ending March 2017 was £239 billion, down from £273 billion in the year ending March 2016; this is the first time it has decreased since the year ending March 2009.

Olivia was the most popular first name given to baby girls born in England and Wales in 2016, replacing Amelia, which has been the most popular girls' name since 2011.

Oliver remains as the most popular first name given to baby boys in England and Wales in 2016 and has been the most popular boys name since 2013.

The last time Olivia was the top girls' name was 2010, and it was the 2nd most popular girls' name every year from 2011-2015. Oliver has been in the top 10 since 2002.
