How do the jobs men and women do affect the gender pay gap?

The number of women working part-time is often said to be a reason behind the overall pay gap, which is 18% in favour of men. But women working full-time earn less, on average, than men in all major occupation groups, even those where women outnumber men.

How do the jobs men and women do affect the gender pay gap?


Five out of six full-time primary school and nursery teachers are women, but women in these jobs earn less than men.

40% of full-time medical practitioners are women, and these women earn 29% less, on average, than men in this field.

83% of full-time receptionists are women, and these women earn 4% more, on average, than men in the same jobs.
