The power of giant submarine avalanches is revealed in a new study
The scale of submarine avalanches in relation to Big Ben
NOC scientists have been part of the team that discovered deep-sea sediment avalanches are far more frequent and long-lasting than previously thought. This discovery was made by examining the first direct measurements of these avalanches, called turbidity currents, 2,000 metres under the ocean's surface within the Congo Canyon, offshore West Africa. Such flows can damage and break important seafloor infrastructure that underpins global digital communications, but until now it has been unclear as to how often these offshore flows occur and how large they can be.
This week NOC's Professor Richard Sanders has been in Jakarta, Indonesia, launching a new research programme that will investigate hydrometerological hazards in South East Asia. These hazards include cyclones, sea-level rise and intense rainfall. They have a high impact in South East Asia, where 500 million people live around a shallow sea that they depend on for food, energy and transport. This new programme was launched at a NERC workshop.
Autonomy & Technology Showcase Line-Up Announced
The NOC is pleased to announce the line-up for this year's Marine Autonomous Technology Showcase (MATS) 2017.
The 3-day programme features an impressive line-up of speakers from across academia, industry and government organisations, discussing recent advancements and aspirations for autonomy in the marine environment. Full details of the programme can be found here and tickets are available online from the conference website.
Spotted in Liverpool
Last Saturday, scientists from the NOC and University of Liverpool took along a host of exciting experiments to the Ness Gardens Science Fair.
Over 600 people visited the event and learnt about our ocean robots and how they're involved in some of the biggest science challenges facing our oceans today. Visitors also had the chance to meet our inflatable, life-size replica of Autosub Long Range, otherwise known as Boaty McBoatface!
This event was part of Earth Science Week, running 7-15 October 2017. You can find out what's happening in your local area through The Geological Society's website.
Working in partnership
The NOC's Kevin Forshaw, Associate Director for Enterprise and Innovation, presented the keynote speech at the OECD's conference on 'Innovation for a Sustainable Ocean Economy'.
Speaking to an audience of 50 international participants, Kevin highlighted how the NOC is working in collaboration with industry partners and other leading research centres, to link ocean sustainablity and innovation.
NOC at UnEarthed - Edinburgh
The NOC will be participating in a massive free public interactive science showcase in Edinburgh in November. UnEarthed, which is being organised by the Natural Environment Research Council, will give families and adults the opportunity to explore the tools used to make science happen, and see the extraordinary work of UK scientists.
