Welcome to the latest edition of the monthly PHE Statistics bulletin.

PHE Statistics is a summary of the latest official statistics releases published by PHE, arranged by topic. The bulletin will also feature any recent ad hoc statistical publications.

Bulletins will routinely be published on the first Tuesday of each month or as soon as possible afterwards.

New Musculoskeletal Diseases Profiles launched

Musculoskeletal conditions are the leading cause of pain and disability in England and account for one of the highest causes of sickness absence and productivity loss.

This new profile tool published by PHE, brings data together in a single platform and user friendly-format to help local government and health services: 

  • understand the health needs of their populations
  • see how many people are accessing services for musculoskeletal conditions in their areas
  • find out the cost and outcomes of services

This first November 2017 release of the musculoskeletal diseases profiles contains 22 indicators, including some with new data, not previously available publicly.

Liver Disease Profiles: November 2017 update

Annual update of premature mortality rates for 2014-2016 data.

General public health

Public Health Outcomes Framework (PHOF): November 2017 update

This quarterly PHOF update shows:

  • A fall in preventable mortality and premature death rates from cardiovascular disease and cancer but an increase in early deaths from respiratory disease.
  • An increase in employment rates and decrease in sickness absence.

Longer Lives: 2017 annual update

Longer Lives highlights levels of premature mortality across local authorities in England.

Latest data for 2014 to 2016, presents premature mortality rates for the most common causes of death in England, including heart disease and stroke, cancer, lung disease, liver disease, and injury.

Wider Determinants of Health profile tool: November 2017 update

This update shows that variation in affordability of home ownership across local authorities in England  has increased in recent years.

Lifestyle and behaviours

Local Alcohol Profiles for England (LAPE): November 2017 update

This update shows there were almost 24,000 deaths attributed to alcohol use in England in 2016, an increase of 1.3% since 2015.

Local Tobacco Control Profiles for England: November 2017 update

This update shows:

  • The prevalence of women smoking at time of delivery in 2016/2017 was 10.7% in England.
  • Smoking attributable mortality was 272 per 100,000 population (age 35+) in England for 2014-2016.
  • In 2016/2017 307,507 people set a quit date. There were 2,248 successful quitters per 100,000 smokers, 72% of which were Carbon Monoxide (CO) validated.

Cancer

Emergency presentations of cancer: quarterly data

Quarterly data for January to March 2017 and an update of the one year rolling average.

Infectious disease

Reports of cases of TB to UK enhanced tuberculosis surveillance systems

Annual update of Tuberculosis cases in the UK for 2000 to 2016.
