Germany's chancellor has warned that differing opinions threaten to tear "a rift" in society in a time of political uncertainty. She has called for more mutual respect and understanding.
Afghanistan funeral blast marks end of deadly year
A deadly bomb blast targeted a crowd of mourners during a funeral in east Afghanistan, capping a string of major terror strikes to hit the country in December. The Taliban denied any involvement with the bombing.

The tightened security is a response to last New Year's Eve when shortly after midnight an IS militant attacked a nightclub. The gunman opened fire on a club in Istanbul killing 39 revelers.

Berlin's Zoo train station evacuated
Several people have been rescued from Berlin's Zoo train station after smoke enveloped one of its platforms. The station in the Charlottenburg district had to be completely evacuated.
Australian seaplane plunges into river, killing 6
The party of five, and the pilot, were returning to Sydney from a midday trip up the Hawkesbury River north of the city. What caused the plane to plunge into the river remains under investigation.
