Venezuela is facing an economic and political crisis. The country's political opposition is fighting every day to regain freedom. The European Parliament awarded the 2017 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to all political prisoners in Venezuela and the democratic opposition, represented by the president of its National Assembly Julio Borges.
On Monday 11 December, the Foreign Affairs Committee, the Subcommittee on Human Rights and the Committee on Development will meet jointly in Strasbourg to exchange with this year's Sakharov Prize laureates, representing the democratic opposition and political prisoners in Venezuela. The meeting will take place in meeting room Louise Weiss N1.4, 19:30-21:00, and will be webstreamed live.

The Sakharov finalist Lolita Chavez Ixcaquic from Guatemala as well as Bethlehem Isaak - daughter of the second finalist Dawit Isaak (Eritrea) - will also participate in the meeting. The award ceremony will take place in the plenary on Wednesday, 13 December at 12 noon.

The Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought is awarded each year by the European Parliament to honour individuals and organisations defending human rights and fundamental freedoms.
