California's deadly flu season could be worst in a decade

A flu season that has laid up families and thinned out workplaces is shaping up to be the worst in a decade, California health officials said Tuesday. Flu-related deaths are well above normal for this time of year. So are hospitalizations and doctor visits for the flu. Still, though the season clearly got off to a rough start, it's too soon to say whether it'll go on record as particularly awful, public health experts said. The state has reported 27 flu-related deaths among people under age 65 so far this season - at least five times the number typically seen by now. It's possible that since the season started early, it will peak early and end early.
