Highlights - 1 February: AFET/LIBE/DEVE joint debate on the Global Compact for Migration - Committee on Development

In the face of the migrants crisis, MEPs want the EU to initiate a new relationship with Africa to promote sustainable development and help curb illegal migration flows
Michele Klein Solomon, Director at the Office of the Director General of the International Organization for Migration, will address Members of the Foreign Affairs, Civil Liberties and Development Committees on 1 February. The debate will focus on the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, which aims to define a range of commitments and principles regarding international migration and human mobility.

The compact is currently being developed in an intergovernmental consultation process and is due to be adopted at an intergovernmental conference in December 2018.
The meeting will take place in room József Antall 4Q1 from 9.00 to 10.30 and will be webstreamed live.

34th session of the Joint Parliamentary Assembly (JPA)
The Development Committee's first meeting of 2018 took place Wednesday, 24 January starting at 9:00 and Thursday, 25 January, ending at 12:30.

Members exchanged with the Commission on the mandate for negotiating a post-2020 partnership with African, Caribbean and Pacific countries, discussed the mid-term review and the future post-2020 architecture for the EU's external funding instruments, as well as issues ranging from ending a fisheries agreement, to budget support, aid for trade and social protection. The new Bulgarian Council presidency discussed humanitarian crises and the EU response on Wednesday afternoon with DEVE Members.
Votes were on Opinions to the 2016 budget discharge and the next Multiannual Financial Framework.
