Trump: campaign 'is doing incredibly well'

Donald Trump has insisted all is well with his presidential campaign, despite his own wayward behavior and reports of unrest among staff. Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus is reportedly among high-profile Republicans considering whether to mount an "intervention". Trump told a rally in Florida, however, his campaign was "doing incredibly well. It's never been so well united." Campaign chair Paul Manafort told Fox News: "I'm in control of the things that the candidate wants me to control." Reports said the campaign had reached out to Chris Christie and Newt Gingrich – vice-presidential hopefuls passed over in favor of Mike Pence – to help the candidate stay on message. Meanwhile Republican congressman Adam Kinzinger, an Iraq veteran, said that he will not vote for Trump.

American woman stabbed to death in London

A 19-year-old man was held on suspicion of murder after an American woman was killed and five people were injured in central London on Wednesday night. The woman was not immediately named. Those injured were Australian, American, Israeli and British. The man was arrested in Russell Square after police stunned him with a Taser. Investigators removed references to terrorism in updates, saying they were keeping an "open mind"; the suspect is a Norwegian national of Somali origin but there is nothing to suggest his background was connected to the attack, police said. The attack occurred near the site of the 7/7 terrorist bomb attacks. London mayor Sadiq Khan appealed for calm.

Trump attacks Clinton on 'scandal' of $400m to Iran

Donald Trump jumped on reports the US paid $400m in cash to Iran after the country's historic nuclear deal, saying the episode was a "scandal" for Hillary Clinton, who started the talks as secretary of state. The Wall Street Journal reported that US officials secretly sent "wooden pallets stacked with euros, Swiss francs and other currencies" to Iran, carried by an unmarked cargo plane, suggesting that it may have been linked to the release of Americans held in the country. The US state department has denied this.

Gunmaker: Clinton policies 'against the lawful commerce'

Michael Fifer, chief executive of America's largest gun manufacturer, Sturm Ruger, has linked record background checks for gun sales to Hillary Clinton's calls for restrictions on firearm sales. While it is impossible to offer statistical certainty, he said: "This is a unique time in our history because for the first time ever we have a nominee of a major political party, one with a very real likelihood of winning the presidency … actively campaigning against the lawful commerce in arms."

Eastwood unloads on Trump critics

The Dirty Harry actor said America is plagued by "a pussy generation", obsessed with political correctness. Donald Trump, the actor told Esquire, is "on to something, because secretly everybody's getting tired of political correctness, kissing up. That's the kiss-ass generation we're in right now. We're really in a pussy generation." He conceded that Trump has "said a lot of dumb things", but added: "So have all of them. Both sides. But everybody – the press and everybody's going, 'Oh, well, that's racist', and they're making a big hoodoo out of it." Eastwood's advice to America: "Just fucking get over it. It's a sad time in history."

Americans among tourists attacked by Taliban in Afghanistan

The governor of Herat province said eight Britons, three Americans and one German were among a group of tourists ambushed by the Taliban. A military spokesman said the attack left at least five tourists and their Afghan driver wounded. It was unclear what the tourists were doing in the country, but there was speculation they had gone there with Hinterland Travel, a small British tour operator.

Obama says family will be 'most precious' memory

Barack Obama, who turns 55 on Thursday and has a 55% approval rating at the tail-end of his second term, told a summit for young African leaders in Washington that family has always been more important to him than politics: "For me, the reason that it's been useful to maintain that balance is I think it's grounded me. It's allowed me, during the course of my presidency when things aren't going so well, to remember that I have this beautiful family and this wonderful wife."

USA beats New Zealand in Olympic opener

The US women's soccer team scored an easy 2-0 win against New Zealand in Rio. "Always composed and in control, the performance was efficient rather than thrilling," writes Tom Dart. The crowd taunted Hope Solo, the American goalkeeper, with boos and apparent chants of "Zika!" in reference to social media posts in which she posed with various anti-mosquito products.

Bowie nominated for big UK prize

The late singer's final album, Blackstar, has been nominated for a prestigious Mercury award. The album, released shortly before Bowie's death from cancer in January, was described as a "parting gift". Blackstar received wide critical acclaim, being described by the Guardian as "ambiguous and spellbinding … a rich, deep and strange album that feels like Bowie moving restlessly forward".

A bear hitched a ride on top of a garbage truck in Los Alamos, New Mexico, for almost five miles before it was able to make its escape up a tree. The driver learned he had a passenger when it squealed – so he drove to a forest service site and backed up to the tree. The animal stayed up there for about an hour.
