Good morning, and welcome to the Morning Mail. Sign up here for our Guardian Today email, sent every day at noon, and you can sign up to our new Guardian Australia sport email here.

Among the stories leading our website this morning is the news that Australia has reached a "one-off" deal to resettle refugees from Manus Island and Nauru in the United States. Some details about how the resettlement arrangements work have been released but much remains unclear. Here's what we know so far.

With a deal on the table that could mean the closure of detention centres on Nauru and Manus, Helen Davidson reviews the saga of Australia's offshore processing: a 'human rights catastrophe'.

Keep reading for the rest of the top stories this morning, with more news from around Australia and the world.

One last thing

'I've started to look on the bright side and it makes me despise myself': an attendee holds a sign up at a Trump campaign rally. Photograph: Bloomberg/Bloomberg via Getty Images

Does Trump's win mean that progress is history? David Mitchell, of Peep Show and That Mitchell and Webb Look, writes: A lot of people think that in general things get better over time. Well, milk doesn't. And look at the natural world: things age and die and rot. Or grow and infest and destroy. And sometimes they germinate and bloom. They don't necessarily get worse, I'm not saying that; but they don't always improve, either. Have an excellent day and if you spot something I've missed, let me know on Twitter at @earleyedition.
