NOC news round-up 18/11/16

Marine Robotics Innovation Centre celebrates its one year anniversary This week the Marine Robotics Innovation Centre at the NOC celebrated its one year anniversary by hosting a week of marine technology events that had over 900 registrations. Opened in November last year, the centre now has 19 members, with eight companies located in the building, working in partnership with the NOC's engineers and scientists. The centre also has 11 Associate Members who regularly access the programme of networking events and engage with NOC partners and projects. Since the centre opened it has created six full time positions, and NOC has pulled in £15m investment for autonomy and sensor development, we well as £8m worth of collaborative research and development projects. The first ever deep-sea plume experiment completed In order to explore the potential effects of deep-sea mining on the surrounding environment, this week the first deep-sea plume experiment has been carried out as part of the MarineE-Tech project. A sediment plume was generated by a deep-sea lander, which Autosub6000 will later swim through at a distance of 1km. The information this generates will be combined with an ecological study of the distribution of the animals most vulnerable to sediment disturbance to assess the potential impact of seafloor mining. To read the MarineE-Tech blog click here or click here. A Year of Autonomy 'A Year of Autonomy' was launched this week at the NOC. This programme of five workshops aims to address the common challenges faced by robotic systems on land, sea and air by encouraging shared learning and collaboration. These challenges include; the development of artificial intelligence, societal acceptance and energy management. This initiative is part of the South Coast Marine Cluster and aims to help the autonomous systems industries in this region to grow and position the South Coast as a hub for innovative, high value companies.
