Geminid meteor shower 2016 ahead
Peak night for the Geminids in 2016 is December 13 (morning of December 14). Best around 2 a.m. Moonlight interferes but these meteors are bright. Maybe you'll catch a cool photo!
Tonight … Planet Uranus in moon glare
Tonight's moon is close to Uranus on the sky's dome. The lunar glare glare will make it tough to spot, but notice stars nearby ... and come back when the moon is gone.

At the December solstice, the Northern Hemisphere of Earth is leaning most away from the sun. Meanwhile, the Southern Hemisphere is bathed in sunlight.
Today's image: Moon halo and 2 planets
Stefan Nilsson in Sweden caught this image of the moon and planets Mars and Venus. The circle around the moon is a 22-degree halo, caused by ice crystals in the upper air.
