Look forward to a wetter Europe

Research from the NOC and the University of Southampton have provided robust evidence that relatively wet regions, like Northern Europe, are getting wetter and dry regions are getting drier - both by about 2 per cent over the last 60 years.

The researchers used measurements of salinity throughout the global, and deep oceans over the last 60 years to estimate how much global rainfall is changing. The study, published in Scientific Reports, analysed the saltiness of the world's oceans.

Most UK coastal flooding caused by moderate storms

Storms on the coast

Scientists at the NOC and the University of Southampton have found that the majority of instances of coastal flooding around the United Kingdom in the last 100 years have been due to moderate storm events combined with high spring tides, rather than extreme storms.

Researchers have undertaken one of the most detailed assessments of extreme sea level and coastal flooding ever carried out for the UK. Their findings are published in Nature Research journal Scientific Data
