Trump bans US aid for international NGOs that perform abortions

President Donald Trump signs executive orders.

Good morning, and welcome to the Morning Mail.

Among the stories leading our website this morning, Donald Trump has begun his effort to dismantle Barack Obama's legacy with a flurry of orders, formally scrapping the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal, and signing an executive order to ban funding for international groups that provide abortions and reinstate the 'global gag rule'. It cuts off all funding to international NGOs whose work is in any way associated with abortion, putting women's sexual health worldwide under threat through more unsafe abortions, fewer cervical screenings, prenatal check-ups and HIV support programmes.

Keep reading for the rest of the top stories this morning, with more news from around Australia and the world.

One last thing

Some scientists argue that regular showering disrupts the body's delicate ecosystem. Photograph: Tim Kitchen/Getty Images

Should we throw in the towel and stop showering? Studies of a remote indigenous tribe in the Amazon suggest that washing with soap products can reduce the number of helpful microbes on our skin. It might be time to join the great unwashed. Have an excellent day and if you spot something I've missed, let me know on Twitter at @earleyedition.
