People, population and community Deaths registered in England and Wales, provisional: week ending 7 Apr 2017 The provisional number of deaths registered in England and Wales in the week ending 7 April 2017 (week 14) was 9,939; this represents a decrease of 88 deaths registered in comparison with the previous week (week 13). The average number of deaths for the corresponding week over the previous 5 years was 10,001. Child mortality in England and Wales: 2015 There were 2,578 infant deaths (deaths under 1 year) in England and Wales in 2015, compared with 2,517 in 2014 and 6,141 in 1985. In 2015, the infant mortality rate increased to 3.7 deaths per 1,000 live births, compared with the lowest recorded rate of 3.6 in 2014. The perinatal mortality rate (stillbirths and deaths under 7 days) decreased to 6.5 deaths per 1,000 total births in 2015, compared with 6.6 in 2014.
