People, population and community International student migration research update: Apr 2017 This article updates on our progress towards developing a better understanding on student migration to and from the UK since the November 2016 update. Latest provisional figures3 show that in the year ending September 2016: - long-term immigration to the UK was 596,000 and long-term emigration was 323,000; net migration was therefore 273,000
- long-term immigration for study was 126,000 (87,000 were non-EU nationals)
- long-term emigration for former students was 62,000 (41,000 were non-EU nationals)
Since the start of 2017, the Data Science Campus in collaboration with ONS's Natural Capital Accounting team have been investigating the potential to form a nation-wide tree dataset, describing the publicly accessible trees surrounding the urban road network. Trees in particular are known to provide a wide variety of social, environmental and economic benefits to the inhabitants of a city. For example, the presence of trees can improve social cohesion, encourage exercise, filter air, reduce flooding, provide habitat for wildlife and even stimulate the local economy. Find out how the Data Science Campus is using data science tools to improve representation of natural resources in decision-making processes through our Data Science Campus blog. |
