Retail sales in Great Britain: May 2017

In May 2017, the quantity bought in the retail industry was estimated to have increased by 0.9% compared with May 2016; the annual growth rate was last lower in April 2013.

Non-food stores were the main contributing factors to this slowdown with an annual fall of 1.2% and predominantly food stores saw the lowest annual growth since July 2013 at 0.1%.

Month-on-month, the quantity bought was estimated to have fallen by 1.2% following strong growth in April 2017.

Commenting on today's official retail figures, Kate Davies, ONS Senior Statistician said:

UK government expenditure on science, engineering and technology: 2015

The UK government's expenditure on science, engineering and technology (SET) continued to grow, expanding by £0.2 billion to £11.4 billion in 2015, an increase of 1.4%.

The 2015 SET estimate of £11.4 billion consists of expenditure on research and development (R&D) of £10.2 billion, UK contributions to EU R&D expenditure of £0.9 billion and knowledge transfer of £0.3 billion.

The UK Research Councils contributed the most to expenditure on SET in 2015 at £3.4 billion, 30% of all expenditure on SET.

Adult smoking habits in the UK: 2016

How have adult smoking habits changed? 

15.8% of UK adults smoked in 2016, down from 17.2% in 2015. 17.7% of men in the UK smoked in 2016, in comparison to 14.1% of women. Those aged 18-24 experienced the largest decline in smoking prevalence since 2010. 

5.6% of people in Great Britain used e-cigarettes in 2016 (approximately 2.9 million people). Explore more through the latest smoking statistics out today.

Changes to the Crime Survey for England and Wales - have your say

The future level of funding for the Crime Survey will be reduced from October 2017. If you use our crime statistics, please take part in our consultation on reductions to the budget. We are seeking user feedback on the potential options in order to inform our decision on how best to achieve the required cost savings.

Following an extensive consultation on the content of the 2021 Census in England and Wales in 2015, ONS will be holding roadshows across England and Wales in July. Places are still available in Newcastle, Birmingham and Cardiff where the latest news on the proposed content for the 2021 Census questionnaire will be shared. 

Updates will also be given on progress towards an administrative data based census after 2021. This will be an opportunity to get the latest news and to ask experienced ONS staff questions.
