Turnbull parodies Trump: "I have this Russian guy"

'We're winning so much': Malcolm Turnbull mocks Trump at Canberra ball – video

Good morning, and welcome to the Morning Mail.

Among the stories leading our website this morning: Malcolm Turnbull was recorded performing a parody of Donald Trump at the Midwinter Ball, in a video that was then made public by veteran journalist Laurie Oakes. Turnbull's impersonation was met with raucous laughter at the parliamentary press gallery ball: "The Donald and I, we are winning and winning in the polls. We are winning so much ... they are so easy to win. Did you know that? I know that."

Turnbull said it was all in fun, and the US embassy in Canberra issued a statement, reiterating Turnbull's position that the speech was not intended to mock. "We understand [it] is equivalent to our own White House correspondents' dinner. We take this with the good humour that was intended." Trump boycotted the White House correspondents' dinner.

Guardian Australia political editor Katharine Murphy writes that the Midwinter Ball, traditionally 'off the record', never should have been: "Does a prime minister delivering a speech in front of 1,000 people really need protection as a source?"
