Warning signs of Alzheimer’s

Alzheimer's Disease is one of the leading causes of death for older Americans. In fact, 1 in 3 seniors die from Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia. And today more than 5 million Americans are living with this disease.

This month is Alzheimer's and Brain Health Awareness Month. Which is why I'm asking: do you know the warning signs of Alzheimer's? If not, you should. Here are some top indicators:*

  1. Memory loss that disrupts daily life
  2. Challenges in planning or solving problems
  3. Difficulty completing common tasks
  4. Confusion with time and place
  5. Trouble understanding images and spatial relationships
  6. Problems with words in speaking or writing
  7. Decreased or poor judgment
  8. Withdrawal from work or social activities
  9. Changes in mood and personality

If you or a loved one is experiencing any combination of these warning signs, seek medical help. Previously, little could be done to aid Alzheimer's and dementia patients. But thanks to the research being done at Mass General, we are beginning to make inroads in treating brain diseases and conditions.

The doctors and staff at our Institute for Brain Health are working hard to better understand, diagnose and monitor these conditions and, more importantly, to develop new treatments to preserve brain function and prevent these diseases.

Your support of the MGH Fund ensures that we stay ahead of the curve in research. So, as we commemorate Alzheimer's and Brain Health Awareness Month, let me take this opportunity to thank you for your generous support of the MGH Fund and our vital work.
