Global tides are changing Research by NOC scientists shows that sea-level rise can significantly alter tides across the world in many different ways. This has implications for future coastal flood risk, harbour management, and the long term planning of tidal energy sites.  Read more on the NOC website here Come and see a model Earth There are just two days left of this year's Royal Society's Summer Science Exhibition, so if you're near London please drop by to see us there.  It's a free family festival of visionary science and technology where you can get hands-on with 'A Model Earth' exhibition which is about the first UK national Earth system model (UKESM1). This model will enable the UK to stay at the forefront of scientific research into climate change, and will provide scientific evidence to support UK and international policy addressing the risk of global climate and environmental change. See more on the Royal Society website. Germany's Science Year on Seas and Oceans British and German researchers have been exploring the seas and oceans together for over 200 years. Now, the United Kingdom is Germany's partner country in Science Year 2016/17. How are marine researchers from both countries working together today? What are their objectives? The website provides an opportunity to find out more about British-German co-operation and collaboration in ocean sciences and features interviews with NOC scientists. This project is sponsored by the British Council and UK Science and Innovation Network. RRS Discovery sets sail from Canada Led by Principal Investigator Dr Kate Hendry (University of Bristol), NOC engineers and scientists join the ICY-LAB team (Isotope CYcling in the LABrador Sea) which set sail from St Johns Canada this week, bound for the Labrador Sea. The team will be investigating nutrient input from melting ice sheets and glaciers into seawater. Their aim will be to capture the whole silicon cycle system in areas of marked environmental change using careful field sampling strategies, coupled with cutting-edge analytical methods.  The first stop on the expedition is a seamount off of the Canadian coast called Orphan Knoll. Supported by NOC engineers, the team will use the ROV Isis to explore seafloor ecosystems of the area, whilst using CTD's and Gliders to take water samples and measuring the behaviour of the water masses across the Labrador Sea.  To follow the ICY-LAB expedition blog click the link below.
