Prices economic commentary: July 2017

The Consumer Prices Index including owner occupiers' housing costs (CPIH) fell slightly to 2.6% in the 12 months to June 2017, while the growth rate of the price of goods leaving the factory gate also fell, to 3.3%.

World prices for brent crude oil have been falling since January 2017, feeding through to falls in producer and consumer prices for crude oil, refined petroleum products and fuels and lubricants.

Consumer prices for goods, including food, have been on an upward trend since mid-2016 in the UK and the EU as a whole.

Commenting on today's consumer and factory gate price figures, ONS Deputy National Statistician Jonanthan Athow said:

Index of private housing rental prices (IPHRP) in Great Britain: June 2017

Private rental prices paid by tenants in Great Britain rose by 1.8% in the 12 months to June 2017; this is unchanged for the third consecutive month.

In England, private rental prices grew by 1.9%, Wales saw growth of 1.1% while Scotland saw rental prices increase by 0.2% in the 12 months to June 2017.

UK consumer price inflation: June 2017

The Consumer Prices Index including owner occupiers' housing costs (CPIH, not a National Statistic) 12-month inflation rate was 2.6% in June 2017, down from 2.7% in May 2017.

This is the first fall in the CPIH inflation rate since April 2016, although it remains higher than in recent years.

UK producer price inflation: June 2017

The annual rate of inflation for goods leaving the factory gate slowed for the second time this year in June and follows a steep decline in input price inflation since January 2017.

Factory gate prices (output prices) rose 3.3% on the year to June 2017 from 3.6% in May 2017, which is the slowest rate prices have increased since December 2016.

The provisional number of deaths registered in England and Wales in the week ending 7 July 2017 (week 27) was 9,263; this represents a decrease of 71 deaths registered in comparison with the previous week (week 26).

The average number of deaths for the corresponding week over the previous 5 years was 8,959.
