Celebrating 40 years of Interior’s Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement

Mail from the U.S. Department of the Interior

For four decades, Interior's Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement has balanced America's need for U.S. coal with protecting the people and the environment. Created on August 3, 1977, OSMRE ensures that coal is mined responsibly, and that abandoned mines are restored for use by local communities. OSMRE has restored over 35,000 acres of streams and land across the nation, as well as planting 84,671 trees in the past two years.

As we celebrate 40 years of OSMRE, read more about the work of the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement.
