DataScience@NIH
New This Week:

The NISO virtual conference, "Research Information Systems: The Connections Enabling Collaboration," will be available for viewing from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. on August 16 in the TSD-LTSS Conference Room (Building 38, Room 1N08J). This conference will look at the vision for and the progress being made in various initiatives (VIVO, REACH NC, and others). How might research information systems become more tightly integrated with workflow applications? The data captured in an RIS system is significant and should be driving increased functionality and accruing value. The event will spotlight entities that foster -- through the development of resources or networks -- the ability of researchers to identify and connect with collaborators for their work. If you miss this or other NISO events, please visit the Workforce Development site's NLM Sponsored Webinars & Webcasts section to access a recording of the event.

Regina Nuzzo will present "How not to fool yourself with p-values and other statistics" on Thursday, August 17th at 11:00 AM in Building 10, Lipsett Auditorium, sponsored by The Data Science and Sharing Team, which supports investigators within the NIMH intramural program in creating, distributing, and leveraging large, open datasets to accelerate discovery. In 2016 the American Statistical Association published its first position paper on the use of p-values, and recently this year a group of statisticians and other researchers published a paper recommending a change to the traditional definition of statistical significance. This talk will discuss some of the p-values problems and solutions raised in these and other papers, illustrating the ideas through a series of examples of published studies. The need for more attention to the communication and "human factors" of statistics and data science will also be briefly discussed.

Registration is now open for the Data Science Rotation for Advancing Discovery Trip (RoAD-Trip). The BD2K Training Coordinating Center (TCC) has developed the Data Science Rotations for Advancing Discovery (RoAD-Trip) program to specifically foster new collaborations among junior biomedical researchers and senior-level data scientists to address the challenge of translating complex data into new knowledge. Applications due September 8, 2017. More information at: https://bigdatau.ini.usc.edu/roadtrip.

The White House blog – "Fueling American Innovation and Economic Growth with Open Data" is now live at: https://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2017/08/11/fueling-american-innovation-and-economic-growth-open-data. Other articles following the 7/25 Roundtable on Open Data for Economic Growth include:

Reminders You May Need
Data Science Opportunities:

The BD2K Training Coordinating Center has been creating and populating the Educational Resource Discovery Index (ERuDIte), a database of 10,000+ data science educational resources from collective BD2K activities and from around the web.

The bioCADDIE DDICC Core Team is pleased to announce the release of DataMed v3.0! DataMed is designed to be for data what PubMed has been for scientific literature. This version of the Data Discovery Index (DDI) prototype includes many additional datasets and reflects considerable user/stakeholder input. The user interface has also been updated to reflect this input.

  • Your feedback is welcome, via the issue tracker included in the landing page.

For more information about DataMed v3.0, email: biocaddie@ucsd.edu or Anupama.E.Gururaj@uth.tmc.edu.

Data Science Events:

The Principle Investigator of the BD2K ENIGMA Consortium, Dr. Paul Thompson, will present the Keynote Lecture at the Cognomics Conference being held September 7-8, 2017 in Nijmegen, Netherlands. Registration for this conference is now open.

Submissions: We welcome your input! Submissions must be received prior to 12:00 noon ET on Monday to be included in that same week's edition. If you are requesting attendance at an event by Federal employees, it is recommended that you submit your event information a minimum of one month in advance.
