11 facts about Sequoia: America’s 2nd national park

Mail from the U.S. Department of the Interior

On September 25, 1890, Sequoia National Park was established to protect groves of towering sequoia trees. Established only 50 years later, Kings Canyon National Park was created on March 4, 1940. Since World War II, these awe-inspiring parks have been jointly administered, which means that visitors can get two parks for the price of one!

Known for protecting some of the largest and oldest trees in the world, Sequoia and Kings Canyon offers so much more. From the highest peak in the lower 48 to sheer granite domes, lush meadows and rugged foothills, these parks astound visitors with their wild beauty.

As we celebrate Sequoia and Kings Canyon's long history of protecting some amazing landscapes and providing visitors with world-class recreation opportunities, take some time to learn more about these incredible parks.
