Hurricane Irma thrashes Caribbean as Jose strengthens in wake
Hurricane Irma has continued to pack 300 kph winds as it moves across the Caribbean towards Florida. The record-breaking storm has battered the Bahamas and Cuba, while Hurricane Jose followed in its path.
Berlin dismisses Polish demands for World War II reparations
The German government has rejected the idea of paying massive wartime reparations to Poland, saying the matter had been settled in 1953. The Polish prime minister and other key politicians recently reopened the issue.

Deadly earthquake strikes off Mexico's southern coast
The death toll from one of the worst earthquakes to hit Mexico has risen to 32 people. About 50 million people across the country felt the 8.2 quake which was centered off the south coast near the border with Guatemala.

Four key leaders of the so-called "Islamic State" (IS) have been killed in the airstrike on in eastern Syria, according to Russia defense ministry. Heavy clashes are continuing in the city of Deir el-Zour.

The 83rd-ranked Sloane Stephens is the 14th unseeded player to reach a major final in the Open era. All four women's semifinalists at the US Open were Americans, for the first time at Flushing Meadows since 1981.
