The National Oceanography Centre has announced the line-up for this year's Marine Autonomy and Technology Showcase (MATS) which runs from 13-18 November at the NOC's Southampton waterfront site.
The three day programme of workshops, talks, demonstrations and networking offers a unique opportunity to find out about the latest developments in ocean technology and how organisations can engage with the NOC to explore opportunities to secure funding, share ideas and get those ideas in front of influential users from the marine and maritime industries.
2017 Year of Autonomy – Energy Management
The Year of Autonomy series continued last week with a workshop on Energy Management hosted by our South Coast Marine Cluster partners in Plymouth. 35 delegates saw talks from people with innovative energy solutions for marine, rail, air and road vehicles, plus a talk from the Satellite Applications Catapult on connectivity in autonomy. Mike Poole from NOC partner organisation AutoNaut gave a presentation on AutoNaut, featuring the NOC's vehicle 'Gordon', this talk demonstrated how MAS can utilise the energy in the environment (wave and solar) to generate their own power.
The Year of Autonomy was launched last November during the NOC's MATS conference and has seen the NOC work with partners from across government, academia and industry to deliver a programme of events across the south coast. The aim of this series was to develop a network for cross sector conversations and collaboration. On 14 November at MATS 2017 the Year of Autonomy steering group will report back on the year and what the next steps are for the series.
Visitors from Qingdao Oceantec Valley
On 23 October Enterprise's Aidan Thorn and ISPO's Jackie Pearson worked with Prof Jon Bull and Prof Andy Cundy from OES to host visitors from the Oceantec Valley Administration. Oceantec Valley is located near the bay of Aoshan in China and is an ocean science and technology new town that will enable technology incubation and innovation. View the impressive promotional film here. The visitors enjoyed presentations about the NOC and University of Southampton, as well as an overview of the Marine Robotics Innovation Centre and teaching and student facilities at the NOC in Southampton.

Meet our Vampire squid...
Since it is the season for all things creepy, NOC scientist Dr Tammy Horton has had a rummage through the Discovery Collections to find some suitably ghoulish marine specimens to share with you. Click here to read about these creatures on our website, including a Vampire squid, a Spookfish, a Fangtooth fish and a Giant Sea-Spider. For those of you not afraid of spiders, you can click here to watch a YouTube playlist of Tammy talking about these specimens.
