The recent widening has been driven by a deterioration in the UK's net investment income with the primary income deficit widening to 2.6% of nominal GDP, as UK earnings on assets abroad have fallen relative to the earnings on foreign investments in the UK. There was also a widening in the trade deficit in 2016 to 2.2% of nominal GDP, the largest trade deficit in six years.
