Highlights - Presentation by Trade Commissioner: the EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement - Committee on International Trade

The EU and Japan last month finalised the talks on the new Economic Partnership Agreement between the two. Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström will announce the outcome of the negotiations in the INTA Committee, which has scrutinized the progress along the negotiations . In order to enter into force, the agreement needs the final approval by the European Parliament. INTA will now analyse the agreement in detail and start the work on its recommendation

For the first time key figures from policy makers to experts in the field will be publically discussing the screening of foreign investments in strategic sectors of the EU. The CFIUS Chair, MS, OECD, the EIB, a number of academic and social partners will share their views on one of the EU's Priority Dossiers for 2018.

A forthcoming trade deal with Mercosur has been identified as the one of the highest potential to date. Nevertheless, the target date of December 2017 to finalise negotiations after the XXXI Round has passed, and a number of areas still need to be agreed. The EU's Chief Negotiator for the trade pillar, Ms Sandra Gallina will present to INTA Members current state-of-play of these negotiations and will explain the steps which lay ahead.

 EU-Mexico trade agreement
Members of INTA Committee have been actively following the trade negotiations aiming at revamping the Global Agreement with Mexico to incorporate new areas of trade and investment which respond to today's citizens, consumers and business demands. An ambitious calendar had foreseen to finalise negotiations by the end of 2017, but parties are not ready yet.

What has already been agreed? Which are the remaining challenges? How do these negotiations fit into the broader picture? The EU Chief Negotiator on the Trade Pillar, will be presenting the state of play to INTA Members.
