Microplastics on our dinner plates? Evidence and risks to people The media has covered findings of microplastics in seafood lately. This talk will present the evidence for those claims, but also show that microplastics are everywhere. Microplastics have been found in tap water, bottled water, soft drinks, honey, canned food and even the air we breathe. In addition, this talk will also explore possible risks to people through eating and breathing in microplastics. Speaker Christina Thiele is a PhD student at the University Of Southampton studying microplastics in the marine environment and possible effects on human health. Her background is in environmental science (BSc) and marine biology (MSc). She is generally interested in anthropogenic impacts on marine environments. For her PhD, she is working towards method standardisation for extracting microplastics from environmental samples. She is also quantifying microplastic exposure risks to humans through consumption of shellfish. Upcoming talks 1 March – Dr Lucy Woodall, Oxford University – microplastics 5 April – Dr Nick Higgs, University of Plymouth – deep sea whale falls 3 May – David Jones – Plastic Oceans 7 June – Dr Jonthan White, author 5 July – tbc August – no MLT due to holiday break Click here to view a recording of the previous Marine Life Talk: 11 January 2018 – Exploring the Deep Sea: how new technology is giving us unprecedented access to our planet's largest ecosystem – Dr Kerry Howell |
