SF's 112-year Great Quake anniversary event brings laughter, warnings

Sirens broke the silence at exactly 5:12 a.m. Wednesday morning, just as they did 112 years ago when the great earthquake throttled San Francisco. Standing at the base of Lotta's Fountain, mayors old and new joined top-ranking police and fire officials, history buffs and curious San Franciscans to remember the 1906 quake. Mayor Mark Farrell spoke, along with Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White and Police Chief Bill Scott, and perpetual attendee and former Mayor Willie Brown took center stage while sporting a dapper long red coat. There was good cheer all around despite the inhospitable hour. Bob Sarlatte, the master of ceremonies, walked the crowd through a dramatic retelling of the 7.
