Black-hole powered jets forge fuel for star formation 02/24/2017 12:29 PM EST Astronomers using the NSF-funded Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) have discovered a surprising connection between a supermassive black hole and its galaxy, located about 5.7 billion light-years from Earth. Powerful radio jets from the black hole - which normally suppress star formation - are stimulating cold gas production in the galaxy's extended halo of hot gas, which could eventually fuel future star birth and feed the black hole itself.
