China's sulfur dioxide emissions fell significantly while India's grew over last decade

Sulfur dioxide is an air pollutant that causes acid rain, haze and many health-related problems. It is produced predominantly when coal is burned to generate electricity. Although China and India remain the world's largest consumers of coal, a new University of Maryland-led study found that China's sulfur dioxide emissions fell by 75 percent since 2007, while India's emissions increased by 50 percent. CMU software assembles RNA transcripts more accurately

Computational biologists at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) have developed a more accurate computational method for reconstructing the full-length nucleotide sequences of the RNA products in cells, called transcripts, that transform information from a gene into proteins or other gene products. Their software, called Scallop, will help scientists build a more complete library of RNA transcripts and thus help scientists better understand the regulation of gene expression. Supercomputing speeds up deep learning training

Researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, the University of California, Davis, and Texas Advanced Computing Center used Stampede2 to complete a 100-epoch ImageNet deep neural network training in 11 minutes -- the fastest time recorded to date. Using 1600 Skylake processors they also bested Facebook's prior results by finishing a 90-epoch ImageNet training with ResNet-50 in 32 minutes.
