HPR 11(19): infection reports and news digest

PHE Health Protection Report

Welcome the latest edition of the Health Protection Report.

Infection reports

News digest

The HPR news section will not be published routinely on the PHE webpages until after the UK general election on 8 June.  In the meantime, a digest of significant health protection-related information is provided here.

  • Increased parvovirus activity in England and Wales
Increased parvovirus B19 activity has been recorded in England and Wales since the beginning of 2017. An HPR report sets the current increase in reported cases in the context of earlier years' seasonal peaks. The infection can be serious in pregnant women, immunocompromised patients and patients who suffer from blood disorders. The need for clinicians to follow up cases and manage them appropriately is noted, and links to relevant guidance is provided.
  • WHO extends wild polio virus PHEIC
After considering latest data on wild poliovirus (WPV) and vaccine-derived polioviruses (cVDPV), the WHO on 2 May confirmed the situation continues to be a Public Health Emergency of International Concern and additional vaccination requirements were recommended for Nigeria and Afghanistan in line with the existing recommendation for Pakistan. Travellers staying for four weeks or more in these three countries should show evidence of receiving polio vaccine in the 12 months before departure from those countries. Further information: NaTHNaC website.
  • Upcoming zoonoses workshops (June and September 2017)
One-day multidisciplinary training workshops on risk assessment, investigation and control of zoonoses are being held on 22 June (Manchester) and 26 September (Bristol). Intended for animal health professionals, local authority/HSE staff and other health protection professionals, the courses cover prevention, identification and treatment of zoonotic disease and the investigation of incidents. Booking can be made online via the above link. Further details: PHE Colindale education and training coordinator: +44(0)208-3277808.
