Good morning, and welcome to the Morning Mail.

An announcement for our regular readers: From next week we'll be returning to a format you will not have seen for a while. Once upon a time, the Morning Mail was a full write-through email. To save time, we moved to the email format you get at the moment, with the central section an automated list of links. As of Monday, we'll return to the full write-through. If you only want an email full of links, you can sign up here for our Guardian Today email, sent every day at noon. Otherwise, get ready for Monday. After a week or so of the new format, we'll invite feedback to see what you think of it. Thanks for reading!

Among the stories leading our website this morning: Mia Freedman's website Mamamia has apologised for what US author Roxane Gay described as "cruel and humiliating" treatment. Mia Freedman had published a podcast interview with text that asked: "Will she fit into the office lift? How many steps will she have to take to get to the interview? Is there a comfortable chair that will accommodate her 'super-morbidly obese' frame?"

In a since-deleted article, Freedman said she "would normally never breach the confidence of what goes on behind the scenes of an interview but in this case … it's a fundamental part of the story". Roxane Gay responded on Twitter, saying she was "appalled by Mamamia".

Keep reading for the rest of the top stories this morning, with more news from around Australia and the world.
