Summer School Success Our Greenhouse Gas Summer School students are at the end of their two week stay in Southampton and left on a high with a behind-the-scenes tour of the RRS Discovery. They've seen the sun shine over the stunning geology of Lulworth Cove and laughed through persistent rain as they sampled along the Beaulieu River (watch the video here!). This intensive two-week course was funded by the Natural Environment Research Council and provided advanced PhD students and post-doctoral researchers with a solid understanding of the role of key greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the Earth system and the processes that govern their dynamics in the atmosphere, ocean and biosphere. Thanks to the students and everyone who made the school such a success including our friends at the University of Southampton, Heathfield transmitting station and Beaulieu Estate. We have finished discovering Greenland's ICY-LAB The RRS Discovery returned to Southampton this week after 36 days in the Labrador Sea, off the coast of Greenland. Scientific operations during this expedition were supported by NOC's National Marine Facilities, including gliders, an ROV and instruments to collect conductivity, depth and temperature data. NOC scientist, Dr Veerle Huvenne, who was on board, said "Our two gliders gathered invaluable information about the water column in offshore Greenland, such as the temperature, salinity and currents in the area. Plus, our Isis ROV collected over 186 hours of video data from the seafloor, surveying an area twice the size of Wales! It was fantastic to be on board with such a great team of scientists, technicians and crew, and I'm already looking forward to the post-expedition meeting where we will be putting together the first scientific results!." This expedition formed part of the University of Bristol-led ICY-LAB project that is investigating isotope cycling in the Labrador Sea. First expedition of the Changing Arctic Ocean program compleates The first of NERCs Changing Arctic Ocean programme expeditions has just been successfully completed onboard the RRS James Clark Ross. The science team, led by NOC scientist Dr Jo Hopkins, have recovered over 150 sediment cores, collected and filtered over 50,000 litres of sea water and an autonomous marine glider, taken 595 photographs of the seabed and visited 43 different stations across the Barents Sea. They are looking at how climate change will impact the Arctic Ecosystem. To read more on our website click here.
